The Future is in Partnerships

The author says that a down economy is not a signal to pull back on diversity efforts. Instead, she urges intensifying those efforts, for solid demographic reasons. According to the most recent census, multiracial-Americans are the fastest-growing demographic group, followed by Hispanic-Americans. In 2008, The Selig Center for Economic Growth noted that both the Hispanic and African-American markets are larger than all but 13 countries.

The author notes that as the market and clients become more diverse, businesses must serve them by “putting the appropriately inclusive foot forward.” She endorses mentoring programs. According to a survey by her law firm, having an effective mentor was key to becoming a successful attorney and making partner. She notes the efforts of a firm client, which meets with diverse bar associations to get references to top multicultural talent.

She offers the example of Microsoft, whose CEO recently stated: “We cannot let current economic challenges derail progress. Diversity is critical to the success of our economy and to the advancement of our society. Workplaces that welcome different experiences, perspectives and capabilities and foster talent and creativity can be great engines of innovation.” Microsoft’s general counsel offers bonuses to providers of legal services that achieve diversity goals. His bonuses are tied to the same goals.
